A drunk, an alligator and a stick

onslow-county-alligator.jpgThis is a blog about a story generated from a blog about animal stories  that I have written for both the Times-News and The Daily News in Jacksonville, N.C. The story was shared with me by someone from Jacksonville who heard it from an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper called to a road in Sneads Ferry, a quaint fishing village in Eastern North Carolina.

The call was made because an alligator was hanging out in the road. It happens from time to time in that area. Alligators leave one body of water and head to another. Sometimes they choose to walk and end up in ditches alongside highways and many other unlikely places. gator-removed-from-us-17-in-2006.jpg

This one never made it into the ditch. He stuck to the road and if something is in the road out in that area, a trooper is called to assist. N.C. Wildlife officers were also notified but before anyone official could take care of the problem, a man, who had a bit too much to drink, handled it. “A drunk guy walked up and used a stick,” I was told. “The alligator bit it, and he walked him off the road.”

I’m not sure if the drunk guy walked the alligator off the road or if the alligator did the leading. All I know is the gator got off the road, and then the wildlife officer handled it from there.

The drunk, who was walking, just continued on his way.

Problem solved.
